Furling masts are also available in electronic and hydraulic versions. This is especially useful for larger yachts. Due to the forces on the rig, operating the mainsail manually is very heavy and the stress on clutches and winches on deck is significantly higher. For cruising boats, often sailing short-handed, sailing can be made much more enjoyable and simple. More sail area can be kept up for longer, ensuring sailing performance also increases. There are also less lines leading to the cockpit, resulting in a "cleaner" deck.
Electrically powered masts only require enough battery capacity and well installed wiring to the base of the mast. TUNED can do this for you. In this case the outhaul remains manually operated but can be led to an electronic winch in the cockpit if this is required.
Hydraulics require more power. The ship will need to be equipped with a "power pack" and a valve system for managing the hydraulics system. An advantage of this system is that hydraulic forestays and winches can use the same powerpack. This makes for more versatile use of the hydraulics system.
